Peter Herbert : Artistic Director,

Jazz Theory

The Austrian bassist Peter Herbert lived in New York for 15 years, now he lives in Paris, leads a busy schedule with about 100 concerts annually performing throughout the world.

Herbert is also a prolific and versatile composer, mostly working with European & American orchestras and ensembles.

As a jazz musician, he has worked with many artists and groups such as the John Abercrombie/Marc Copland Quartet, Art Farmer, and Woody Shaw and has appeared on over 100 records.

He is familiar with Arabic music having played with oud virtuoso and singer Marcel Khalife since many years, and since 2007 he is teaching a small bass class at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz/Austria.

Ellery Eskelin

Ellery Eskelin: Saxophone

Ellery Eskelin has been living in New York City since 1983. In 1992 an important and ongoing musical relationship with drummer Joey Baron began. His trio tours regularly and has performed hundreds of concerts in the US, Canada and throughout Europe.
As a side-person Eskelin has worked with a broad cross section of jazz, avant-pop and new-music figures such as composer Rabih Abou-Khalil.
Eskelin's recordings as a leader and co-leader have been named in "Best of the Year" critics' polls in the New York Times, The Village Voice, and major jazz magazines in the US and abroad. He also appears on over forty recordings as a side person. DownBeat Magazine named Eskelin as one of the

25 "rising stars for the future" in 2000.

He was also a nominee for the prestigious Jazzpar-award in 2003.

Mark Dresser : Double Bass

The double bass player, improviser, and composer Mark Dresser is a musician in command of a unique language.

Having studied with Bertram Turetzky and played in the San Diego Symphony at University of California San Diego (B.A. and M.A. degrees), Dresser took part in the Los Angeles avant-garde jazz scene of the early 70's.

Living in New York from 1986 to 2004, Dresser recorded over one hundred CDs including those with Ray Anderson, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, and John Zorn. He has composed chamber music, music for silent film, and solo music.

In 2003 he was nominated for the Grammy.

He is a lecturer at the faculty of University of California, San Diego.

Lisa Bielawa

Lisa Bielawa : Composition

Lisa Bielawa is a composer and a member of Philip Glass Ensemble and "Composer in Residence" of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Several of her pieces of music were performed at the Carnegie Hall and at the Lincoln Center.

She received rave reviews by New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Boston Globe.

One of her latest compositions "Kafka Songs" was interpreted by the famous volinist Carla Kihlstedt.

Mark Feldman : Violin, Viola

The ECM artist, Mark Feldmann, one of the most famous Jazz violinists in the world, is currently a member of the John Abercrombie Quartet.

He has not only worked with musicians such as John Zorn, Billy Hart, Joe Lovano, Louis Sklavis, Dave Douglas, the Manhattan Transfer, but also with pop celebrities for instance Cheryl Crow, Diana Ross and Johnny Cash.

In addition he worked as a composer for the Kronos Quartet and the WDR Radio Orchestra.

As soloist, he appears on over 200 recordings.

Huw Warren : Piano

Huw Warren is one of the leading and most original voices on the current new music scene in Great Britain and beyond. As a composer and multi-instrumentalist, his work is difficult to categorize; refusing to accept conventional musical barriers, but finding fans and admirers in the worlds of jazz, new music and world music.


In 2004 he was asked to compose for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Choir.

Warren was co-founder of the Ensembles Perfect Houseplants, several times awarded, and additionally received the BBC Award for Innovation.

Jim Black : Drums

Jim Black has been playing drums for nearly

30 years, he is one of the most demanded Jazz drummers, and in New Music respectively.

In addition to co-leading and composing for the groups Pachora and Human Feel he tours extensively with various groups and musicians including Ellery Eskelin, Uri Caine, Chris Speed, Tim Berne, Dave Douglas, Dave Liebman, and Laurie Anderson to name but a few.

Jim Black has been recorded on over 100 albums.

Wolfgang Muthspiel : Guitar

Wolfgang Muthspiel is back taught at JIMS a couple of years ago. In 2008 he celebrated his "comeback".

Muthspiel is the founder of "Material Records" and co-musician of Brian Blade, Ralph Towner, Youssou N'Dour, Dhafer Youssef, Rebekka Bakken, and Paul Motian.
This artist of contemporary jazz music creates something new with his instrument.


Since 2002 Muthspiel has been living in Vienna and was awarded with the European Jazz Price in 2003.

Claudia Solal : Voice

As an author and composer Claudia Solal, daughter of famous pianist Martial Solal, has been performing regularly since 1995 on the European and American Jazz-Szene. Archie Shepp, Nguyen Le, Darryl Hall are some of many great artists, who worked with Claudia Solal due to her incomparible voice.

In 2008 she composed the Music for Joelle Gorons TV movie "Entre mere et fille" (together with Jean-Charles Richard).

Claudia has been teaching at the Strasbourg Conservatory since 2005 and is running a vocal improvisation workshop at the Maurice Ravel Paris Conservatory.

Vincent Courtois : Cello

Vincent Courtois is a cello player of both worlds: coming from Classical Music he began playing improvised music in various Parisian groups.

His first CD as a leader, titled "Cello News", was released in 1990. Since then Vincent Courtois has recorded more than ten CDs.

Vincent played in several of Rabih Abou Khalil's bands and plays frequently with clarinet star Louis Sclavis. 

In the past 20 years Vincent has played or recorded with artists like Dave Douglas, Michel Petrucciani, Dave Holland, Mark Feldman and many more.
